Yeti drawings for Seattle Met

I had the great opportunity to work with Andre and Chris over at Seattle Met Magazine on a really fun project for their December 2011 issue! Andre called me in early in the process with an idea of having a bunch of spot drawings of a Yeti for their “Reasons to Love Seattle in the Winter” feature. It was a wonderful collaboration, and I had a blast working on these little drawings. It definitely made me step outside of my comfort zone a bit and just have some fun. Thanks again to Andre and Chris – and great typography by Friends of Type

First NY Times illustration

I was thrilled to get a call from the New York Times a couple of weeks ago to illustrate the headline flag for the special section on the NYC Marathon. Every year they do some kind of illustrated take on this flag, and in the past there has been some really great pieces! This is my first assignment for the NY Times and I couldn’t be happier about it. Thanks very much to Wayne for the great opportunity! Enjoy!

Chicago Magazine Turkey Day

I was asked by Todd at Chicago Magazine to do a quarter page illustration on story about a man who decides to pick out his Thanksgiving day turkey from a live poultry shop. The story was a bit on the dark side, which was fun for me – especially when the author talks about whether or not to butcher his turkey. The challenge was to make this piece represent the ominous feel of the story, without showing a knife, or too much blood. Special thanks to Todd – I had a great time with this one. Enjoy!

Washington Post illustration

I am very excited to share this section cover I illustrated for the Washington Post! The Art Director was awesome to work with, and we really met eye to eye on the direction of this cover. Thanks a bunch to Tim for assigning this and kind of letting me run with it, but also having some great insight. Fun job!

Occupy Wall Street

I decided to take a ride to Zuccotti Park in the Financial District today to draw some of the Occupy Wall Street protests. I’m really glad I got down there to do some drawing, but also just taking it all in was really important to me. I met a lot of really cool people. Of course there were some people who were acting a bit ridiculous, but also a lot of really intelligent, passionate people. I was actually surprised of the amount of older people I saw at the gathering. Most of what I’ve seen on the news has been focused on the quirky “hipsters” and naked people holding signs… there was that… but there was also a lot of legitimate grievances being poured into the air. Anyway – on to the drawings. I was able to capture a few people getting arrested. I am not entirely sure the reason they were arrested by authorities, because I just rushed over when I heard the commotion. I was able to draw as much as I could, specifically of a younger girl getting put in the NYPD van. She must have been 17 or 18 years old. Also, a few drawings of a group of people singing and chanting – lead by an older gentleman with a guitar who was pretty cool! Enjoy!

I really hope to be able to get back there some time this week to do some more drawings. It was overwhelming in a way, but also a really nice day to experience all of this. Thanks for reading!

I’ve had the pleasure of working on some really great projects lately. Below is a few portraits from a series of nine portraits I did for the October 2011 issue of Atlanta Magazine. This was for an upcoming murder trial preview in the Atlanta area. Thanks to Eric for the call!

Also, I had the opportunity to work on some hand done typography which is always a lot of fun to work on. This one is for USPS Deliver Magazine. Thanks to Todd and Grayson for this project! Enjoy!
